Floral Series: The Anatomy of a Prayer
“Where the petal meets the promise.”
This collection explores the vertical movement of faith. It is a visual map of our dialogue with God - starting from the “Word” (the foundational promise), at the base rising through the “Bloom” of our petition, and finally finding the “Wing” as the soul takes flight in the confidence of being heard.
Technical Note: The Texture of Truth
My floral works utilize a mixed-media approach to illustrate the dialogue of prayer. Starting with the firm foundation of God’s Word - literally decoupaged onto the canvas - layers of ink, acrylic and oil are applied to show the flourishing of His promises. This “anatomy of a prayer” reminds us that His faithfulness is not seasonal, but situational and everlasting.
The Foundation: Use of decoupaged scripture, specifically 1 John 5:14-15, serves as the literal and spiritual base of the work.
The Medium: A blend of Mixed Media and Oil Paint on stretched canvas allows for layers of transparency and light, illustrating how God’s promises unfold in our lives.
Symbolic Movement: Notice the transition from the structured text at the bottom to the organic, fluid beauty of the flowers above - representing the shift from reading a promise to experiencing its fulfilment.
BETWEEN WORD AND WING (The Petition) > This piece grounded in the promise of 1 John 5:14-15, serves as a visual map of our dialogue with the Creator. It captures the vertical movement of faith, starting from the “Word” at the base, rising through the “bloom” of our petition, and finally finding the ‘Wing” - the soul taking flight in the confidence of being heard. The Bee near the water and the stems, represents active, persistent prayer. Just as a bee diligently seeks nectar, the believer seeks the sweetness of God’s promises. It is the “work” of prayer - the gathering of strength and the focused intent of the heart. “How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Psalm 119:103) | Mixed Media and Oil paint on stretched canvas. 70/50cm.
INHERITED PROMISES (The Legacy). This piece sits at the intersection of history and hope. It suggests that our prayers do not exist in a vacuum, but are often the continuation of a dialogue started generations ago. It is a visual celebration of the “Inherited Promises” found in scripture - blessings that were spoken over us before we were even born, now coming into full, vibrant bloom in our own season. “We are confident that He hears us.. and since we know He hears us.. we also know that He will give us what we ask for.” (1 John 5:14-15). Mixed Media and Oil on stretched canvas, 40/50cm.
THE FRAGRANCE OF FAITHFULNESS (The Lingering beauty of His Work): This piece serves as the heart of the Floral Series. It captures the moment when a promise moves beyond a request and becomes a presence. Like a fragrance that fills a room long after the flower has bloomed, this painting represents the lingering evidence of God’s faithfulness. It is a reminder that His work in out lives leaves a lasting mark, sweetening the air of out current season with the memory of His past provision. “He has made everything beautiful in its time.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Mixed Media and Oil paint on stretched canvas, 40/60cm.
ZINNIAS IN GILDED LIGHT (The daily Favor) > Zinnias are the “workhorses” of the garden - sturdy, long-lasting, and vibrant. In this series, they represent the steady endurance of a life built on answered prayer. This piece captures them in “Gilded Light,” symbolising the moments when God’s favor rest upon our daily, ordinary efforts, turning the common into the extraordinary. “I will remember the deeds of the Lord, yes, I will remember of Your miracles of long ago.” (Psalm 77:11). Mixed Media and Oil Paint on Canvas, 40/50cm.
UNVEILING MEMORY’S PRESENCE (The Remembrance). The Song of the Altar > This piece represents the “Ebenezer” of the garden - a place of remembrance where a past answer from God resurfaces to provide fresh courage. It is about the melody of faithfulness that remains in the room of our hearts long after the prayer was first answered. Here, memory of faithfulness that remains in the room of our hearts long after the prayer was first answered. Here, memory becomes a song of praise; it is the “unveiling” of a truth we’re once knew, rising again to harmonise with our current season. When we remember His goodness, our breath naturally turns into a song. “Thus far the Lord has helped us” (1 Sam 7:12), “He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.” (Psalm 40:3). Mixed Media and Oil Paint on stretched canvas, 50/70cm.
THE SNAIL’S CARTOGRAPHY > The Sanctity of the Slow > This painting is a tribute to the sanctity of the slow. It represents the “cartography” of a life lived in trust - where we don’t always see the destination, but we can look back and see the silver trail of grace left behind. It is a praise for the small steps, the daily endurance, and the quiet map the Creator is drawing through our humble obedience. “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.” (Psalm 37:23). Mixed Media and Oil paint on Stretched Canvas, 50/70cm.
STONE AND SILK > This piece concludes the Floral Series by exploring the paradox of the Kingdom: that God’s strength is perfected in our weakness. The “Stone” represents the unshakeable nature of His decrees and the “ink” of His truth, while the “Silk” represents the fragile, vibrant life that flourishes because of that stability. It is a final reminder that we can afford to be vulnerable and open because we are supported by a Foundation that cannot be moved. “He is the Rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just.” (Deuteronomy 32:4). Mixed Media and Oil paint on 100% Cotton paper, 40/50cm
